We offer the following Student Support Services for our students so that we can provide acceptance, appreciation and guidance, so that all children can develop their unique skills and abilities to their fullest potential.

Counselling

The Secondary Counsellor at Langley Fine Arts aids students in decision making in three key areas: academics, career and post-Secondary, and personal. Support is provided for students to enable them to make positive choices around their school work, time management, finding help for their course work, planning for post-Secondary, and applying for scholarships.
Both the Elementary and Secondary Counsellors work with students to resolve social and personal difficulties. Counsellors work with students as mediators and also consult with parents if there are concerns or need for referral.

The Counselling Centre is an excellent resource for students and their parents interested in university and college literature, as well as career information. The centre is open to all during school hours.

Resource

Our Resource Program is designed to support students who have severe difficulties in learning, or who have been identified as students with learning needs. A Learning Disability is a learning difference, which doesn't allow a student to achieve at his/her cognitive level. Resource staff work with students and teachers to build an Individual Education Plan that addresses the differences in learning, and helps the student to develop new learning strategies and compensatory skills that build on their learning strengths.

Star Program

The Students-at-Risk (STAR) Program is a support program for all students from Grades 1 through 12 who may be struggling socially, emotionally, or academically at school or at home. The program encourages students to build on their existing strengths and to be and to feel successful in all aspects of their lives. We strive to give students a sense of belonging and to teach them respect for themselves and for others.

The program also assists the students’ families, helping them access any kind of community support they may need.

Program strategies include the following:

•       daily communication with students in crisis and their families;
•       in-class support for academic and social difficulties;
•       advocacy for students with parents, teachers, social workers, and Ministry workers;
•       emotional support with a schedule that is flexible and available during the day & after school;
•       “big buddy” system for older students-at-risk to help younger students-at-risk;
•       social gatherings for students;
•       lunch time opportunities for students who struggle socially and need a place to go;
•       opportunities for students to attend conferences or workshops pertaining to their needs; and
•       mediation and conflict resolution between students, peers, and families.

The STAR Program works closely with counsellors, resource staff, and teachers, acts as an advocate for the students and their families, and provides a link between school, home, and community.
